Marshall.
Opinion is only as valid as its verifiable supporting evidence.
90% certain those are QC stamps.

Why didn't we think of that! Duh!
Here's a message from the person with the 803A, it's from a Capistrano 831A that was purchased in 1958.
"HI, I was bothered by this so I called the man I purchased this from and he has the original receipt with all serial numbers on- he ordered it directly from the factory in 1958. He personally told me that no work has been done, it is all original- voice of the theater speaker."
Real nice person to talk to. I'm tempted to see if I can talk to the original owner and get the s/n's.
I'd say Old Guy has nit the nail on the head, and well I was wrong bout it being non original. This is from the 50's, thats a long time ago and Altec did many things that we are not aware of, like this, until they pop up and collective minds figure it out.
Essentially, if I remember right, QC was done with a batch order # which was the order issued for production. Then there was a "sequence number", and last a QC stamp.
If a multiple bad product showed up, the rest of that batch and sequence could be pulled and checked.
All this stems from a conversation 42 years ago at Altec. So take with a one pound box of Morton Salt.
